The Drinky Crow Show is Quite Intense

This is the first thirty seconds of the Drinky Crow Show, which aired its pilot on Adult Swim last May. I believe this opening sequence represents everything good about the show — namely, that Drinky is a pathological mess who, when he is not busy getting drunk, is trying commit suicide. It is also worth mentioning that the theme song was composed and performed by They Might Be Giants.

The premise can be funny, if only the hyperactivity was notched up a bit. The pilot was equal parts inspired but staid. Too much focus is on Uncle Gabby, and not enough focus is on Drinky's violent tendencies. Still, what this pilot excels at is genuinely "WTF" moments that gross you out so much, you must laugh.

Further thoughts: this could be a great show. Hopefully, the Cartoon Network sees the promise here, and produces more episodes. The Simpsons, you will recall, took years to get where it is today. There is not enough absurdist humour in cartoons today (with the exception of South Park), and hopefully the Drinky Crow Show will pile it on.

TV-B-Gone: The Universal Remote for Turning Off Any Television

File this under "I wish I thought of that". TV-B-Gone is an idea so absolutely simple I feel a sense of shame I didn't patent the idea. All you have to do is point it at any television, and it will turn off.

This makes for a stellar prank and I remember a Mr. Steve Wozniak who invented a device similar to this. If my memory proves me correct, I recall he invented it before the advent of the universal remote (which he also pioneered too). Hide one of these puppies in your pocket and which the social chaos that happens.

They do make a good point, though, about why television shouldn't be watched.

Q. Why would one want to live without TV?

A. Because watching TV takes time, and time is precious. There are so many things to do that are fun, healthy, relaxing, and good for your social life! Some people find themselves watching TV when they don't really want to. Have you ever found yourself doing this?

Yeah, there's nothing good to watch on television. When I had more than basic cable, I really enjoyed the Comedy Network and the Discovery Channel, but now I just turn it on so I could have some noise. But I could live without it.

Druggachusettes -- From Mr. Show

In my mind, Mr. Show is one of the most underrated sketch comedies ever produced and David Cross is one of the most underrated comedians living today. The above skit is proof. It's got everything: an absurd premise, potential to become overtly offensive, and just enough dose of reality to counter the fantasy.

Indeed, Drugachusettes would be a miserable children's show if actually produced. As I point out time and time again here, absurdity is by no means a guarantee that it isn't going to happen. If some misguided proponent for hallucinogens did decide to create a show for kids trying to raise awareness about the benefits thereof, I imagine it would look like this.

Herein lies the genius of Mr. Show. It may be silly, but not impossibly silly — and laughable if it came to pass. I miss that show.

Junior Christian Science Bible Lesson Show

At first, I thought this was a parody, and why wouldn't I? It features all the earmarks of one. There's the alien singing songs written by Mary Baker Eddy, the smirking talents of James Quall, and the psychedelic transitional effects. Also, let's not forget the puppets. Chip the Black Boy is an unforgettable puppet.

So is this a parody? Evidently not! The puppeteer's name is David Nkrumah Liebe Hart and he looks something like this.



Apparently, the Junior Christian Science Bible Lesson Show is somewhat legendary amongst fans of Los Angeles public access television. The show has been teaching kids about UFOs and the dangers of drugs to kids since 1988. No word on how effective his show is at communicating this message, but it makes for entertaining television.
